In Batman Begins at the very end of the movie, Commissioner Gordon asks Batman, "What about escalation? ... We get kevlar, they [the crooks] get bullet piercing bullets, we get semi-automatics, they get army grade automatics, (etc)"
My friends in school used to talk about how you could never pick a fight with a girl, not because of some wired misplaced chivalry or something though, but because they would escalate things way to quickly. Like you would tap a girl on the shoulder and she would whirl around and grab a fistful of your nuts. Whereas guys would build to that sort of thing over a period of time. Girls just fought dirty.
That was the first thing that came to mind this morning when the radio was reporting on Israel's reaction to the Hammas kidnapping one of their soldiers. You didn't hear this? Ok, well, they carpet bombed the city where the kindnappers were supposed to be. Bombed it. With planes. THEN, they went into the West bank and arrested every single member of Hammas they could find. And have no intentions so far of making any kinds of trades with them under any circumstances. Holy Crap. Seriously, doesn't that sound like a little bit of overkill?
Of course, Israel has always shared the US form of liberation and defense, which is, "Get them before they get you, even if you have the slightest inkling that they might be up to something at sometime in the future at somepoint."
Just keep poking that bear boys, cause eventually, it's going to decide it's had enough and snap your arm off at the shoulder.
