the saddest kind

I was talking to a friend of mine today about emotional poverty. What spurred this was her relating to me a story about when she used to teach second grade. She would ask the children to go home and have certain good papers that had high marks on them signed and brought back. There were constantly children who would come back crying and really upset because they could not get their parents to sign these. Keep in mind these are GOOD grades that the kids were PROUD to show to their parents. One little girl came back in tears because she said she waited up for her mother to come home as late as she could, and then when she went to her mother's room in the morning to wake her up and get her to sign it she refused to get up and ordered the kid out of the room.

What the Fuck.

I'm serious if you can't be bothered to take care of children then don't have them, or give them up to adoption or smother them in their sleep or something. And oh please do not feed me lines of single parent working blah blah blah. Yeah it's hard to make ends meet on one salary and be a parent but BOO HOO. No one ever held a gun to your head and forced you to have children so tough shit (see previous entry).

There are whole scads of kids in the states like this. This friend of mine had taught both abroad and in the states and said it was not nearly as big a problem elsewhere. I have no idea why that is, but it's weird.

Just yet another reason on my list of "Why we should sterilize people..."
